Statement of Need

For a long time, the main focus of most countries has been enhancement of economic growth and development through the intensive use of natural and human resources.

However, factors such as climate change, human development crisis, and collapse of national and global economies call for new and innovative ways of addressing global challenges, in an embracing and sustainable manner.

This module seeks to equip the participants with the requisite competencies to engage with development issues and prompting them to appreciate and develop sustainable alternatives to achieve sustainable development (SD) at local, national, and global levels.

The course recognizes the role of multi-actors in sustainable development. This course introduces the participants to concept and debates in the field of sustainable development.

In particular, it covers the origin and current discourses in sustainable development; the theories of economic growth and development; the institutional framework for sustainable development at global, regional and national level; The global development agenda (history and current milestones), Population and Environment nexus; Agriculture, food security and Poverty; Globalisation, integration and Foreign Direct Investments, Natural resources and Conflict; Human Rights Based approaches; Sustainable Livelihood Approach; Gender based violence and gender equality.

How participants will benefit

It is expected that at the end of the module, the participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the key actors, concepts, principles, and theories of sustainable development.
  • Understand critical bottlenecks to sustainable development at multi-levels and be able to develop and critique strategies for sustainable development.
  • Appreciate the motivation behind development initiatives
  • Make up an informed judgement of their expected or actual performance on SDG contribution.
