Migration and Climate Change
As the issue of migration and climate change gains greater attention globally, it is becoming increasingly important to provide training on this topic to key stakeholders including government officials, civil society organizations, and community leaders. Managing migration and climate change is a complex issue and requires a comprehensive understanding of the environmental, social and economic impacts of climate change on communities and the inherent risks associated with climate-induced
migration. It also requires the development of effective and culturally appropriate strategies to manage migration and climate change in a way that protects vulnerable communities
.As the planet’s climate continues to change, extreme weather events such as floods, wildfires, and hurricanes are becoming more frequent and severe, leading to displacement of populations. This displacement can be temporary or permanent, depending
on the severity of the environmental impact. In addition to environmental factors that prompt migration, population growth, poverty, and lack of opportunities in rural areas can also play a role. This training can also help equip stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to address the challenges associated with managing climate-induced migration, such as the equitable distribution of resources, protection of human rights, and addressing the needs of displaced communities. Developing an understanding of the interconnectivity of climate change, migration, and global policy frameworks is also critical in managing
effective interventions.
At the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
- To improve understanding of the causes and impacts of climate change on migration, including the social, economic and environmental impacts on communities, regions and nations.
- To provide participants with knowledge on how to identify, assess and manage the risks associated with climate-induced migration.
- To equip participants with the knowledge and tools to meet the needs of vulnerable communities who are affected by climate-induced migration, including refugees and internally displaced persons.
- To promote an understanding of the international policy frameworks relating to climate-induced migration and how they affect national and local policies, including the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and action plans developed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
- To provide participants with knowledge and understanding of the range of adaptation and mitigation strategies, including disaster risk reduction, that may be used to address the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities and minimize the risks of climate-induced migration.
- To promote knowledge and understanding of human rights concerns and gender-based considerations arising from climate-induced migration.
- To develop skills in identifying, collaborating and working with a range of stakeholders towards addressing the issue of climate-induced migration.
