Dr. John Mlyahilu

Dr. John Mlyahilu is a Tanzanian academic and researcher in the Department of Physics, Mathematics, and Informatics at Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE), a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam.

His research focuses on computer vision, image processing, deep learning, signal processing, and mathematical modeling, with significant contributions to industrial automation and quality control systems.

Dr. Mlyahilu has published extensively on welding bead detection and segmentation, including a 2022 study on a morphological geodesic active contour algorithm for segmenting welding bead edges.

His recent work involves a 4-camera framework for automated visual inspection, employing optimized deep learning architectures and a Green’s theorem-based classifier for real-time welding bead quality assessment.

His research interests also extend to 3D object reconstruction from 2D images, similarity measurement algorithms, and cultural dynamics modeling. Dr. Mlyahilu has collaborated with researchers at Pukyong National University in South Korea on multiple projects.
