Dr. John Mlyahilu

Dr. John Mlyahilu is a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Informatics at Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE), which is a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

His research is focused on developing intelligent computational systems at the intersection of machine learning, computer vision, and mathematical statistics.

He specializes in creating advanced algorithms for industrial quality control, with particular emphasis on defect detection, image and video classification, and pattern analysis in manufacturing environments.

Dr. Mlyahilu’s work is driven by practical industrial applications, bridging theoretical signal processing with real-world solutions. A major contribution is his work on automated welding bead inspection, where he developed an algorithm combined with image processing techniques for segmenting and assessing robot-manufactured welding beads. 

Additionally, he has contributed to the classification of 3D film patterns using deep learning, and proposed a Fast Fourier Transform with a brute-force algorithm for detecting and localizing white points on 3D film pattern images, achieving an average detection ratio of 0.98.

Beyond industrial applications, Dr. Mlyahilu applies computational and mathematical approaches to diverse fields. He has developed novel mathematical methods for sample projection in linguistic landscape studies, bridging computational analysis with social science research.

Other collaborative work includes applying advanced computational techniques to model the dynamics of lymphatic filariasis, contributing to public health research.

His recent publications also demonstrate a continued focus on educational research, including a systematic review of teaching approaches in Tanzanian secondary schools.

Dr. Mlyahilu holds a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, and computer science. He has established significant international research collaborations, notably with colleagues at Pukyong National University in South Korea, where he completed postgraduate studies and published extensively.

His research contributions are documented in numerous publications in international journals.
