COURSE OVERVIEW
The environmental, social, and legal safeguard policies and standards of development partners such as the World Bank and AfDB are designed to prevent and mitigate undue harm to people and their environment in the implementation of specific development projects, and to ascertain that project benefits reach the target population. Projects are required to comply with the safeguard policies, and are carefully examined for their proposal on how to achieve due compliance with safeguard policies, before being accepted for funding by development partners, and during project implementation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Officials involved in planning, designing and managing government funded and donor (e.g. the World Bank, the African Development Bank) funded projects in the roads sector, energy and power sector, education sector, health sector, agriculture and irrigation sectors, and local government sectors.

HOW PARTICIPANTS WILL BENEFIT:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Integrate environmental and social safeguards in projects in a systematic manner ensuring compliance with the requirements of national regulations and the policies of development partners.

• Mapping Vulnerable and Marginalized Groups (VMGs) as well as Physical & Cultural Resources (PCRs);
• Incorporating VMGs and concerns of Indigenous People in project phases;
• Mitigating Gender Based Violence and Sexual Exploitation in Projects;
• Protecting Physical & Cultural Resources (PCRs);
• Undertaking Social Advocacy on Environmental and Social Issues
• Grievance Handling Mechanisms;
• Monitoring and Reporting Compliance to Environmental and Social Safeguards.
