Course Title: Health, Safety and Environmental Issues in Mining, Oil and Gas Sectors

Through the course participants will be able to understand the prevailing global Health & Safety Standards and the supporting legislation and standards. The particular conditions within plants and facilities and the more general impacts on local environment and populations will be considered. In particular techniques to assess environmental and social impact from industrial risks and appropriate mitigation measures and emergency response plans will be developed.

Participants will be introduced to stakeholders' mapping, public consultation and public disclosure plans to build local public support. The key performance indicators required to monitoring the environmental and the proposed social management plans will be reviewed. Reclamation during Closure and Post-Closure after operation will be required to ensure that long-term Health & Safety is provided to communities.


Objectives:

At the end of the Programme participants will be able to:

  • Understand the global prevailing context for the mining, oil and gas industry;
  • Grasp legal requirements and standards with respect to impact on local environment and populations;
  • Understand techniques and contents of environmental and social impact assessments;
  • Identify mitigation measures, perform stakeholders' mapping and build public consultation and disclosure plans;
  • Select key performance indicators, and set up monitoring with environmental and social management plans; and learn about minimum requirements for restoration of operational sites after abandonment.
  • Analyse global prevailing context for the mining, oil and gas industry;
  • Use legal framework and standards with respect to impact on local environment and populations;
  • Apply techniques and contents of environmental and social impact assessments;
  • identify mitigation measures, perform stakeholders' mapping and build public consultation and disclosure plans;

The Programme will be beneficial to project and site managers, advisors, regulators, safety and environmental professionals, engineers and operations staff involved in oversight or management of environmental and social issues all along the life cycle of mining and oil and gas upstream projects.
